The F/V Blue North is a purpose-built longliner designed by Norwegian naval architects Skipsteknisk and constructed by Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes, WA. The flagship vessel if BWS legacy company Blue North Fisheries, the Blue North was completed in 2015 and is the most technologically advanced longliner in the United States.
Utilizing an innovative drive system knows as an “azimuth” or “L-drive,” this vessel uses a diesel-electric hybrid power plant to drive steerable, 360-degree rotating thruster pods mounted to the underside of the vessel. The Blue North is also equipped with a “moon pool” allowing fish to be hauled on board without exposing crew members to harsh weather. The vessel operates with a crew of 24 and has a freezer hold capacity of 40,000 cases, equivalent to 900 metric tons of finished product.
Captain Mike Fitzgerald is a lifelong commercial fisherman. He joined BWS legacy company Blue North Fisheries as the first captain on the F/V Blue North in 2015, coinciding with the completion and commissioning of the vessel.
He retained his position as F/V Blue North captain in 2019 following the merger of Blue North Fisheries and Clipper Seafoods to form Bristol Wave Seafoods.
